Frequently
Asked
Questions
What are the qualifications to become a dietitian? What credentials do you have?
Dietitians obtain a 4-year degree with approved coursework by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics. Dietitians are required to complete a minimum of 900 hours of supervised practice from an accredited program. After the completion of the program, they must pass a national board registration examination. Then every 5 years, it is mandatory that they have a number of continuing professional educational units to maintain registration.
What’s the difference between a nutritionist and dietitian?
A dietitian is an expert in diet and health. They work with clients to alter their nutrition based on medical conditions and individual goals. They must have a bachelor’s degree and supervised experience, as well as take a national exam. They must continue obtaining professional education to maintain board certification. The term nutritionist can be applied to anyone who offers general nutrition advice. Nutritionists are not regulated the same way that dietitians are. People who do not have professional training can also call themselves nutritionists.
Do I have to live in California to make an appointment?
Through telehealth, I can see clients from anywhere in the country. We can set up a secure, HIPAA compliant call.
Do you take insurance?
I am an out-of-network provider, so I unfortunately do not accept insurance at this time.
As a dietitian, do you eat really healthy food?
Not necessarily. I believe in eating all foods in moderation. Being able to enjoy favorite foods is a part of what makes life worth living. Health goals are achieved better when we don’t feel deprived or restricted. I don’t like to label foods as “good” or “bad.” Instead, I call them “sometime foods” and “all the time foods.”
Can I do a group session with my spouse?
Although doing individual sessions is best, sometimes people feel more comfortable doing sessions with their significant other. These sessions can run longer and operate differently than individual sessions. It can be an option for those who don’t want to do nutritional counseling on their own.
